Don Forst, the former editor of New York Newsday, gave up his job as metropolitan editor of The Daily News last night, less than three months after he joined the paper. Mr. Forst, 63, joined The News after New York Newsday folded last summer. Despite reports that he was unhappy, Mr. Forst said only, "It was a very amicable parting."

After six weeks of trying to run for President from the well of the Senate, Bob Dole finally conceded today that his strategy was not working. But while he can take himself out of Congress and get a new backdrop for his speeches, this Congress will inevitably remain a big part of the Dole candidacy. He cannot escape being judged to some degree on the record it compiles and by its personality even after he goes.

Metrocall Inc. said yesterday that it would buy A+ Network Inc. for about $216 million in stock and the assumption of $125 million in debt, creating the fourth-largest paging company in the United States. The purchase, the sixth by Metrocall since February, will give it 2.5 million customers. Metrocall, which is based in Alexandria, Va., plans to buy A+ Network in two steps. It plans a tender offer for 2.1 million A+ Network shares at $21.10 a share and intends to buy 2.2 million shares directly from certain A+ Network shareholders. Metrocall said it would exchange each of the remaining A+ Network shares for $21.10 worth of Metrocall stock. The shares of A+ rose $4.75, to $20.25, yesterday in Nasdaq trading. The shares of Metrocall slipped 37.5 cents, to $20.125, also on Nasdaq.

Abbott Laboratories said yesterday that it would market Sonus Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s Echogen Emulsion contrast agent as part of a strategic alliance between the two companies. Abbott will pay Sonus $31 million for the rights to the product, a liquid injected into ultrasound patients to improve the quality of imaging technology. Sonus, of Bothell, Wash., will be responsible for clinical development of Echogen, and Abbott will be in charge of United States marketing and sales. Abbott also paid $4 million for warrants to buy 500,000 shares of Sonus common stock, equal to about 6 percent of the stock outstanding. Sonus stock rose $4.125, to $20.50, in Nasdaq trading.

The shares of the Dell Computer Corporation surged yesterday after the personal computer maker defied gloomy industry-demand forecasts to report sharply higher sales and earnings. Dell shares closed up $2.375, to $49.375, in Nasdaq trading of 9.9 million shares; earlier in the session, it touched $51.75, an all-time high. As recently as early March, the stock was at $28.25 a share. Dell, of Austin, Tex., said that its first-quarter net income rose 32 percent to $82 million, or 84 cents a share, on a 44 percent increase in sales to $1.64 billion.

The Healthsouth Corporation said yesterday that it would acquire Professional Sports Care Management Inc., a provider of outpatient physical therapy, for $67 million. Healthsouth, based in Birmingham, Ala., a provider of rehabilitation services for disabled patients, said the purchase would add 36 sites to its network of 900 outpatient centers in 45 states. Professional Sports Care is based in Harrison, N.Y. Under the agreement, the company's shareholders are to receive 0.233 share of Healthsouth's common stock for each share they own. The shares of Healthsouth fell 50 cents yesterday, to $35.50, on the New York Stock Exchange. Professional Sports Care shares rose 12.5 cents, to $7.50, in Nasdaq trading. Healthsouth said that if its stock price were to rise above $38.625 during a specified period, the exchange ratio would be adjusted.

Shares of Analogy Inc. fell 34 percent yesterday after an analyst said that the General Motors Corporation, one of its largest clients, had postponed purchases from the software developer indefinitely. John Barr, an analyst at Needham & Company, also said he had lowered his fiscal 1997 and 1998 earnings estimates for Analogy, of Beaverton, Ore. Analogy shares fell $4.50, to $8.75.

Tyco International Ltd. agreed yesterday to buy Carlisle Plastics Inc., a maker of specialty packaging materials and garment hangers, for stock valued at $121 million. Tyco, a maker of packaging materials and disposable medical products in Exeter, N.H., said it plans to exchange 0.172185 of a Tyco share for each of Carlisle's 17.9 million shares. Carlisle shares jumped $1.75 yesterday, to $6.625, and Tyco's rose 25 cents, to $39.375. Carlisle Plastics, which is based in Phoenix and has annual sales of $400 million, would become part of Tyco's disposable and specialty products business.
