NEWS ON OLD NEWS BUILDING The sale of the landmark Art Deco skyscraper on 42nd Street that once housed The Daily News is drawing to a close. According to real estate executives, the owners of the 37-story, 1.1-million-square-foot building at 220 East 42nd Street recently winnowed the list of bidders to three, including Aby Rosen and SL Green, a real estate investment trust based in Manhattan. The skyscraper was something of a success story for its owners, Steven C. Witkoff and Dreyfus Realty Advisors. Mr. Witkoff bought the tower in 1996 for $101 million, after The Daily News moved out. He quickly signed a lease with Omnicom for most of the vacant space in the building, enabling him to get a $140 million mortgage for the property.

HALE HOUSE INQUIRY WIDENS The state attorney general's office said yesterday it would investigate allegations that donations to Hale House, the Harlem children's shelter, were used to shore up a failing off-Broadway musical produced by the husband of the charity's president. The Daily News reported yesterday that Dr. Lorraine E. Hale and her husband, Jesse DeVore, funneled $500,000 to Mr. DeVore's show, "Faith Journey," which was based on the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Both Dr. Hale and Mr. DeVore, the charity's public relations director, agreed earlier this week to resign from Hale House, and a new interim board of directors was named. It is expected to name Edna Wells Handy, a former general counsel for the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation, as the charity's interim executive director.
