Rupert Murdoch, the media entrepreneur, announced plans yesterday to start a 100-channel digital broadcasting system in Japan within two years. Mr. Murdoch said his company, the News Corporation, would produce and supply only a handful of the channels, leaving most for Japanese programmers. Only 3 million households in Japan receive cable television, compared with about 60 million in the United States. Also, 7.4 million Japanese households receive two satellite channels offered by the public broadcaster NHK. Digital technology lets a satellite transmit many channels, with better picture quality than conventional analog TV. (AP)

No Leak Inquiry, Judge in Bomb Case Says

The judge in the Oklahoma City bombing trial refused today to order an investigation into news leaks in the case, saying it would be a waste of time. But the judge, Richard P. Matsch of Federal District Court here, issued guidelines to lawyers on both sides, ordering them to refrain from making further prejudicial comments or disclosing evidence. Last month prosecutors and defense lawyers accused the other side of making unauthorized disclosures of information in an effort to manipulate public opinion.

The chairman of the Philip Morris Companies, Geoffrey C. Bible, said yesterday that the company expected healthy earnings increases this year and beyond. Mr. Bible, in comments to securities analysts in New York, said that Philip Morris, the food and tobacco giant, expected to buy back $2.8 billion worth of stock in 1996. He added that the company was "more than living up to our commitment to increase dividends at least in line with earnings." Last year, the company raised its dividend by 21.2 percent while net earnings per share rose by 19.4 percent.

Micron Technology Inc., the semiconductor company based in Boise, Idaho, reported late yesterday that its earnings in the fiscal third quarter fell 74 percent from a year earlier as prices for its computer memory chips plummeted. Micron's net income for the quarter, which ended on May 30, fell to $58.2 million, or 27 cents a share, including a $12 million one-time gain, from $220.2 million, or $1.02 a share, a year earlier. The company's sales rose 1.3 percent, to $771 million from $761 million. Analysts surveyed by IBES International had expected the company to report earnings of 31 cents a share.

The Regency Realty Corporation agreed yesterday to sell a stake of about 43 percent to Security Capital U.S. Realty for $132 million, providing cash to buy and develop shopping centers in the Southeast. Under the agreement, Regency, based in Jacksonville, Fla., will sell Security Capital 7.5 million common shares in three steps for $17.625 each, and Security Capital will nominate two directors to Regency's board. After the sale, Regency will have about 17.3 million shares outstanding. Regency Realty owns 35 shopping center properties in the Southeast. Security Capital, based in Santa Fe, N.M., is headed by William Sanders, founder of the international real estate services firm LaSalle Partners Ltd. Regency's shares rose $1.875 yesterday, to $21, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Newcourt Credit Group Inc. said yesterday that it had agreed to purchase the Custom Vendor Finance operations of the Pitney Bowes Credit Corporation, a unit of Pitney Bowes Inc., for undisclosed terms. Newcourt said it would acquire Custom Vendor Finance's existing operations, including 12 United States vendor finance programs. Newcourt will also acquire a portfolio of secured loans. The portfolio and related operations are valued at $126 million, the company said.

The Raytheon Company has settled Federal Trade Commission charges that its $475 million purchase of Chrysler Technologies Holding Inc. would violate antitrust concerns, clearing the way for it to move ahead. Raytheon, the defense and aerospace giant, agreed to erect an "information fire wall" for the remainder of a bidding competition between it and the GTE Corporation for the United States Navy's purchase of a satellite communications system to be used in submarines. Chrysler Technologies, a unit of the Chrysler Corporation, is providing GTE with antenna and terminal controls that are used in a proposed satellite system.

COMPANY NEWS;AMERICA ONLINE TO SELL ADVERTISING FOR NETSCAPE SITE

America Online Inc. said yesterday that it and the Netscape Communications Corporation were forming an unusual arrangement in which America Online sales representatives would also sell advertising space on Netscape's World Wide Web site. Netscape has one of the most popular sites on the Web, allowing visitors to download its Navigator software, which helps users browse the Web. Analysts said they expected the deal to bring in more revenues for America Online.
