WHEN a newspaper runs an article that angers a big advertiser, it is common for the aggrieved advertiser to threaten to pull his ads in order to get friendlier treatment. Rarely does the advertiser have to make good on the threat, publishers being aware that advertising dollars are scarce. But last year in San Jose, Calif., a tiff over an article in The San Jose Mercury News headlined, "A Car Buyer's Guide to Sanity," in which consumers might learn how to negotiate lower prices, quickly escalated into war.

Saving the Artistry of a Visionary

FOLK environments are fragile things. At the Anderson Johnson Faith Mission in Newport News, Va., part of the building is salvageable, and part is not. In 1923, when Mr. Johnson was 8, he had a vision from God, who told him to go out and preach, said Deborah McLeod, curator of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, a nonprofit community arts center in Newport News. In the two-story building where Mr. Johnson lived from the 1970's until last year, he painted the walls with angels and people (left), inspired by his visions. On Sundays, he held services in the mission, in the Ivy Avenue area of the city's southeast section. In 1993, the city government decided to build three recreation centers, including one where the mission stands, and paid Mr. Johnson $50,000 for the house and an adjacent one that he also owned. In September, Mr. Johnson moved out -- and Ms. McLeod organized an effort to save the murals.

JOHN HOCKENBERRY has gone where few would dare. As a foreign correspondent he has traveled by donkey amid what he calls the "slow stunned bleed" of Kurdish refugees after the Persian Gulf war and covered the intifada in Israel and the famine in Somalia. Between assignments, he likes to kayak in the tough currents of the East River. But he has his limits. He will take an escalator only if he has no other choice. "If you take an escalator just to show off, you will die," said Mr. Hockenberry, who became paraplegic in a car accident 20 years ago, when he was 19.

For many years, from the beginning of the 1970's, my family and I lived in Peterborough, a town of about 5,000 in southern New Hampshire. Thornton Wilder was in residence there when he wrote "Our Town," which used, unchanged, the names of the nearest mountain and river and exemplified the community's peace, modesty and common sense. Though we moved to Houston 13 years ago, we return to our old neighbors every summer, to the secure, nurturing society in which our children grew up. This is a town where shopkeepers still walk fearlessly down Main Street carrying their bags of cash-register money to the bank. Where a newpaper headline that read "Crack Found in High School" referred to the condition of its walls.

NBC BID IS ALLOWED FOR OUTLET COMMUNICATIONS

The effort of the Renaissance Communications Corporation to block NBC's 396 million bid for Outlet Communications Inc. was rejected yesterday by a Delaware judge. The denial of the temporary restraining order came after a two-hour hearing. It could put pressure on Renaissance to raise its bid or risk losing Outlet, based in Cranston, R.I., the owner of two NBC affiliate stations. The ruling by Judge William T. Allen of Delaware Chancery Court followed an offer by NBC on Monday, which included the assumption of $75 million in debt. NBC, a unit of the General Electric Company, said its offer was good until today at 5 P.M. NBC's bid topped by $5 a share the price offered by Renaissance in a merger agreement signed with Outlet on June 30. Renaissance immediately sued NBC and Outlet, contending the bid -- and Outlet's consideration of it -- was an illegal interference with the "definitive" and "binding" agreement.

LEARNING COMPANY UP 37% ON BRODERBUND MERGER

The shares of the Learning Company soared 37 percent yesterday after the Broderbund Software Company agreed late on Monday to acquire the software company for about $415 million in stock, to form the nation's largest maker of educational software. The Learning Company's stock jumped $14.50, to a record $53.50, on Nasdaq trading of two million shares. Broderbund stock fell $3.9375, to $68.0625. The Learning Company is the market leader in retail sales for educational software, including the titles "Reader Rabbit" and "Student Writing Center."

CIGNA SHARES CLIMB ON GOOD EARNINGS REPORT

The Cigna Corporation's stock rose 10 percent yesterday after the company said that its second-quarter earnings had risen 58 percent on improved results in its property and casualty business. Shares of the insurer, based in Philadelphia, rose $8.25, to close at $89.25. Cigna announced its quarterly results after the market closed on Tuesday, and trading yesterday morning was delayed about 45 minutes by an order imbalance. Cigna said profit excluding investment sales rose to $189 million, or $2.60 a share, from $120 million, or $1.65, a year earlier. The results exceeded Wall Street's expectations of $2.09 a share.

PACIFIC DUNLOP SELLS MOST OF PACIFIC BRANDS

Pacific Dunlop Ltd. of Australia said early today that it had sold the bulk of its Pacific Brands food group for the equivalent of $785 million to three buyers, including the J. R. Simplot Company of Idaho and Nestle S.A. of Switzerland. Pacific Dunlop sold its major dairy operations and a 45 percent stake in a Thailand ice-cream venture to Nestle's Australian unit for $422 million. J. R. Simplot, a privately held company, has acquired the Edgell-Birds Eye frozen foods business and bakery operation Herbert Adams Bakeries for an undisclosed price. And Pacific Dunlop said its Socomin Fine Foods had been sold to Manassen Foods Australia for an undisclosed price. Pacific Dunlop, based in Melbourne, is a consumer and industrial products and food conglomerate.

NATIONAL AUTO CREDIT TO SELL AGENCY RENT-A-CAR

National Auto Credit Inc. said yesterday that it had reached an agreement to sell its rental replacement business, Agency Rent-A-Car, to Avis Inc. The terms of the agreement include the sale of unspecified assets and a short-term lease for the rental vehicles, which will be used by National Auto's member dealers. Shares of National Auto, a Solon, Ohio-based finance company, slipped 12.5 cents, to $14.375, on the New York Stock Exchange.
