Philip M. Foisie, who initiated overseas news coverage at The Washington Post as its foreign editor and later served as the executive editor of the Paris-based International Herald Tribune, died on Tuesday at a hospital. He was 73 and lived in Alexandria, Va. The cause was a heart attack, The Post reported.

Seated in his wheelchair at his computer at home this morning, Brian Dickinson began writing his weekly column for The Providence Journal-Bulletin with one of the few parts of his body he can still move -- the middle finger of his left hand. Slowly, as his finger touched a toggle switch on his wheelchair table, words, and then sentences, appeared on the screen. "One of the many truths about a serious illness, I've learned, is that it utterly transforms the way one regards the world," he wrote. "Perspective is drastically, permanently altered.

The problem caused by huge crowds that descended upon Marlboro Township in the hope of seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary was officially downgraded to a traffic nuisance today. Judge Patrick J. McGann Jr. of State Superior Court said that the visions were no longer said to occur and that Joseph Januszkiewicz, 56, who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary each Sunday for three years, "is no longer seeing visions, and the Blessed Mother is no longer talking to him -- the case is over."

After a weeklong effort, the International Paper Company acquired control yesterday of Carter Holt Harvey Ltd., the paper company based in New Zealand. International Paper, based in Purchase, N.Y., paid 1.7 billion New Zealand dollars, or about $1.15 billion, to lift its stake to 50.1 percent for the company, which it has managed for the last four years. Before the takeover, International Paper held 23.7 percent of the company. With Carter Holt, International Paper, the world's largest producer of forest products, hopes to increase its manufacturing capacity without building new plants.

The Nynex Corporation said yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the MFS Communications Company that eases the way for MFS to compete in the Nynex Massachusetts calling region. The agreement will give customers a choice of providers for local phone service in the areas that MFS chooses to serve. The move is the second such agreement between Nynex and MFS. In January Nynex gave MFS increased access to the Nynex market in New York. Nynex, based in New York, is moving to open its local market in hopes that state and Federal legislators will let it into the long-distance industry.

Hitachi Ltd. and the Fonar Corporation settled a patent dispute involving magnetic-resonance imaging technology yesterday, after opening arguments in a Federal jury trial in Hauppauge, L.I. Fonar, a maker of M.R.I. machines, sued Hitachi and the General Electric Company in 1992 over four Fonar patents related to M.R.I. technology, which is used to produce detailed pictures of the human body. Fonar was seeking $62 million from Hitachi and a subsidiary, Hitachi Medical, and about $300 million from G.E. After the settlement was disclosed, Federal District Judge Leonard Wexler granted a motion by G.E. for a mistrial, a court official said. Lawyers for G.E. argued that reports of the Hitachi settlement would bias the jury against G.E. Fonar, based in Melville, L.I., did not release details of the agreement.

Shares of Intuit Inc. fell yesterday, as a report of possible moves by the Justice Department increased speculation that the proposed $1.4 billion acquisition of Intuit by the Microsoft Corporation might fall through. While some analysts said they did not expect the Justice Department to oppose the acquisition, private antitrust lawyers said department officials were inclined to impose restrictions on what Microsoft could do with the Quicken personal finance software program of Intuit, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., has its own personal finance software. In Nasdaq trading yesterday, shares of Intuit fell $1.25, to $76.25, and shares of Microsoft fell 87.5 cents, to $75.25. A report in an on-line newsletter, Interactive Week, said Justice Department officials were collecting evidence for a possible challenge to the acquisition.

The New York Mercantile Exchange said yesterday that it would allow trading in crude oil futures contracts for delivery in December 1998 and December 1999. Currently, crude oil futures can only be traded as far forward as December 1997. The new contracts will be added on May 1, the exchange said in a news release. The exchange said it was adding the contracts in response to industry demand. "The significant levels of open interest we see as far as 30 and 36 months out are clear evidence of an increased focus being placed on long-term risk management in this industry," Patrick Thompson, the president of the exchange, said.

The BankAmerica Corporation said yesterday that its first-quarter earnings rose about 19 percent, as a stronger economy prompted consumers and companies to borrow more. BankAmerica, the banking company based in San Francisco, said net income rose to $611 million, or $1.46 a share, compared with $513 million, or $1.27 a share, in the corresponding period a year earlier.
