AT FIRST GLANCE, "REPORTING the War: The Journalistic Coverage of World War II" at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington looks like the kind of show that only a World War II buff could love. Lots for them to love here: documents, reading matter, fine photographs like W. Eugene Smith's from Saipan -- though most of the photographs are not shown to great advantage. A few, like Margaret Bourke-White's spectacular view of an air raid on Moscow, are impressively enlarged, then cropped to fit into archways. As for the visual material about reporters, it is by and large less interesting than their words, appropriately enough. And memorabilia like the helmet of the writer Richard Tregaskis or Edward R. Murrow's microphone, though they may quicken many a pulse, will induce narcolepsy in some viewers.

China Tries to Blot Out Memories of 1989

China deployed security forces against its dissidents today and interrupted international news broadcasts to prevent commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the 1989 military attack on the Tiananmen Square democracy movement. In anticipation of the anniversary, security agencies had put scores of dissidents under house arrest or close surveillance, a tactic most recently used during Secretary of State Warren Christopher's visit in March.

Catholics Question Article of Faith

For years large majorities of American Roman Catholics have disagreed with their church's official teachings on subjects like contraception, remarriage after divorce and ordaining women to the priesthood. But a New York Times/CBS poll taken in April turned up a more startling result. Since ancient times the church has taught that the bread and wine offered at mass during the sacrament of holy communion are mysteriously changed into the actual body and blood of Christ, in keeping with Jesus's words at the Last Supper. In contrast, some Protestant views treat the bread and wine as symbols or reminders.

BESSEMER CAPITAL SELLS ITS STAKE IN TIDEWATER

Tidewater Inc. said yesterday that Bessemer Capital Partners L.P. had sold its remaining four million shares of Tidewater, an oil-services company, through Salomon Brothers Inc., which resold the stock to institutional investors. The shares represent 7.5 percent of Tidewater's roughly 53 million shares outstanding. Shares of Tidewater fell $1, to $20.625, in New York Stock Exchange trading of 2.1 million shares. Bessemer acquired about 7.8 million Tidewater shares as a result of Tidewater's acquisition of the Zapata Gulf Marine Corporation in January 1992. Bessemer later sold about 3.8 million shares in a secondary offering in June 1993. Tidewater owns and operates a fleet of vessels used for offshore oil drilling and a fleet of natural-gas and air compressors in the United States.

PEPSICO'S EARNINGS IN 2D QUARTER MAY TRAIL ESTIMATES

Pepsico's earnings in the second quarter "may fall short of consensus estimates," a Merrill Lynch & Company analyst, Allan Kaplan, wrote yesterday in a research report. "Several of its business sectors are running below plan, according to a recent contact with the company," Mr. Kaplan wrote. The analyst estimates earnings of 59 cents a share for the company, which makes Pepsi soft drinks and Frito-Lay snack foods and operates Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell restaurants. Mr. Kaplan's second-quarter estimate is below the mean estimate of 62 cents a share, according to 13 analysts polled by Zacks investment Research. Pepsi's stock fell 75 cents, to $36, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Dollar Stages Broad Rally; 2-Month High Against Yen

The dollar rallied against most major currencies yesterday, rising to a two-month high against the yen, as surging bond prices indicated there was renewed investor confidence in American assets. "Clearly, the dollar has found a bottom to its recent slide," said Marc Cohen, managing director at C-Wave Capital Management, a currency-trading firm in Fort Lee, N.J. "People who had written off the dollar are reconsidering."
