CHARLES OSGOOD'S breezy exhortation "See you on the radio" has helped make him one of the most popular figures in broadcasting. But his role in trying to sell you on the radio is now posing some problems. Beginning Sunday, Mr. Osgood will replace Charles Kuralt as the host of "Sunday Morning," the weekly CBS News program that has earned a reputation as a softer, quieter interlude amid the frenetic world of network television. But to accept the position, Mr. Osgood asked that he be able to continue his duties on "The Osgood Files," three-minute commentaries that are broadcast weekdays on CBS Radio.

A CD-ROM Magazine Is a Sound Possibility

MANY personal computers come equipped with CD-ROM drives and sound cards, and almost all can be fitted with them afterward. They open up many possibilities. More and more frequently, high-end software is supplied on disks instead of on a dozen or more floppies; games on CD's offer video sequences, and the devices can even play audio CD's with the proper software. The Macintosh here is running "Gershwin Plays Gershwin," a nice anachronism: piano-roll reproductions tinkling out of a double-speed AppleCD 300 reader and a pair of speakers. The software is also Apple's: CD Remote, which puts the image of a remote-control unit on the screen.

EQUIFAX ACQUIRES APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

Equifax Inc. said yesterday that it had acquired the Programming Resources Company, a closely held applications software development concern based in Hartford. Terms were not disclosed. Equifax, based in Atlanta, has been acquiring businesses as part of its goal of becoming the leader in providing information services to the health care industry. The company said Programming Resources would give it more depth in providing systems applications to the insurance industry.

CORNING COMPLETES A SALE OF DAMON OPERATIONS

Corning Inc. said its Metpath Inc. unit had completed the sale of the California clinical laboratory operations of the Damon Corporation to Physicians Clinical Laboratory Inc. for $51 million in cash. Under terms of the transaction, Physicians Clinical will also assume liabilities of about $3 million. Corning, based in Corning, N.Y., said it would use the proceeds to retire a portion of the debt incurred when it acquired Damon last August for about $370 million.

JWP SAYS S.E.C. INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE VIOLATIONS

JWP Inc. is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission for possible securities law violations, according to bankruptcy documents filed in New York. JWP, based in Rye Brook, N.Y., said in court papers that the S.E.C. had first informed it of the investigation last May. JWP has not issued a public statement that it was under investigation. It addressed the investigation in a disclosure statement filed in United States Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on Feb. 14, the same day it filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors, Alys Reynders, a spokeswoman for the company, said. She said the company's Chapter 11 status freed it from any obligation to disclose the existence of the S.E.C.'s inquiry outside the bankruptcy disclosure statement.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES OFFERING LOWER FARES TO EUROPE

Continental Airlines began offering lower spring and summer fares yesterday on flights to Europe that do not carry typical restrictions like minimum stays or round-trip purchases. The fares are 10 percent to 20 percent below restricted spring and summer sales from most United States cities, Continental said. Tickets must be purchased by April 21. The new fares are available from most United States cities that Continental serves to its five European destinations: Frankfurt, Munich, London, Madrid and Paris. Spring fares for one-way travel range from $249 to $449, while summer one-way fares range from $299 weekday and $319 weekend to $569 weekday and $589 on weekends.

YEAR-ROUND DISCOUNTS OFFERED ON FLORIDA FARES

USAir began offering year-round fare discounts yesterday as deep as 55 percent on many routes between the Northeast and Florida, with ticket prices varying by season. "This is not a sale but an offering of low prices year-round, adjusted for seasonal demand," said Robert Fornaro, senior vice president for planning. Over all, round-trip fares range from $198 to $378. Travel would be cheapest from April 19 to Dec. 15, with round trips between $198 and $258, depending on the day of the week. The new fares are nonrefundable and require a 14-day advance purchase and a Saturday night stay. Passengers using the fares can stay as long as 30 days. In certain markets, fares may already be lower than those announced yesterday, USAir said.

SYMANTEC TO BUY CENTRAL POINT SOFTWARE IN STOCK DEAL

The Symantec Corporation said it planned to buy Central Point Software Inc. in a stock transaction worth about $60 million. Symantec, based in Cupertino, Calif., is the publisher of Norton Utilities software. The company will exchange about four million shares for Central Point, which is based in Beaverton, Ore. The combined expertise of the companies will help them develop diagnostic software for computers in large corporate networks, the companies said. Symantec's stock rose 37.5 cents yesterday, to $16, in Nasdaq trading.

MAGAININ SHARES PLUNGE AFTER DRUG TEST FAILS

The stock of Magainin Pharmaceuticals Inc. plunged 59 percent after the company said its lead drug had failed in a test. Magainin, which develops drugs based on compounds from animal immune systems, said yesterday that an ointment known as MSI-78 had failed to outperform a placebo in a trial on children who had impetigo, a skin infection. Magainin shares fell $7.875, to $5.375, in Nasdaq trading. Magainin went public in 1991 amid expectations that MSI-78, which is based on a peptide in frogs that disinfects their skin, would create a popular line of animal-based drugs.

Big Rise in Layoffs Seen

As the Government reported huge hiring increases, United States employers laid off 192,572 people in the first quarter, the largest first-quarter total since 1989. The monthly Challenger Employment report, released today, said job cuts in March rose by 29 percent, to 49,008, from 34,618 in February. The report is published by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement consulting company. James Challenger, the company's president, said mergers were one reason for the increase in cuts.
